17th of September 2009
At:18.15
Weighing: 4.585Kg / 10.11 Lbs
Measuring: 53.5 Cm

More after the jump

The Pea did not want to come on his own accord so we were scheduled in an appointment to have him induced on Wednesday the 16th of September

On Wednesday at 12.00 the hospital rang and said we might not be going to induce the Pea after all because they did not have any beds available for us. Caroline and I then decided to go out for a nice lunch together just the 2 of us in case they did manage to find a bed. We had a lovely lunch at an Italian restaurant just around the corner from us,
At 15.00 the hospital rang to say they found a bed for us in the antenatal ward (i think). And they told us to present ourselves at the hospital at 17.00.
Around 21.00 they finally started inducing the Pea, because he was moving all the time they could not establish a base heart rate.

Then at 0.00 Thursday morning Caroline's water broke!!!
At 01.00 in the morning we were taken to the delivery ward.

And at 01.30 her contractions started.
Many hours later Caroline asked for Nitrous Oxide to take the edge off the contractions and probably at around 09.00 or 10.00 (could be later) she eventually asked for an epidural. She looked soo much better after it.
Then at 17.00 we received news Pea had to come by Caesarean Section. He was facing the wrong way and Caroline's urine had blood in it, a sign Pea was pressing on her bladder too much.
After all that hard work and pain.....

Not much later we were taken to the operating theatre and Oliver Jack Thoma was born on the 17th of September at exactly 18.15!!!

Oliver had a little bit of a temperature and was bright red, which made the nurses call in a baby doctor to give him a quick check-up. Leaving me about 2 hours alone with him before we met up with Caroline who was taken from the recovery room to the post natal ward by then. When the doctor checked up on him he thought it was not an infection or anything as Oliver did not display the right symptoms. But they would monitor Oliver's temperature just to make sure over the course of the evening/night. After Oliver's first feed his temperature went gradually down.

We stayed five days in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for Caroline to recover a bit from her Caesarean Section. And because Caroline was in a private room I was allowed to stay. Those few extra days in hospital were very educational. We learnt a lot from the midwives during that time.

We can't thank the staff at the RPA enough for all their help and the support they have given us.

Arnie, Caroline and Oliver
