GOOD: Business of Death

Throughout the developed world the business surrounding death has often been an uneasy topic of discussion. Originating in the mid-19th Century, the modern funeral has evolved into an economic and cultural monster, with a vast network of supporting industries and myriad options for your earthly remains.

In a nutshell: Who profits from your untimely misfortune? And the music isn't bad either.

Horizon - Einstein's Equation of Life and Death (2)

In the summer of 1939 Albert Einstein was on holiday in a small resort town on the tip of Long Island. His peaceful summer, however, was about to be shattered by a visit from an old friend and colleague from his years in Berlin. The visitor was the physicist Leo Szilard. He had come to tell Einstein that he feared the Nazis could soon be in possession of a terrible new weapon and that something had to be done.

Szilard believed that recent scientific breakthroughs meant it was now possible to convert mass into energy. And that this could be used to make a bomb. If this were to happen, it would be a terrible realisation of the law of nature Einstein had discovered some 34 years earlier.

Part 1 Horizon - Einstein's Unfinished Symphony can be found here.

Horizon - Einstein's Unfinished Symphony

As Albert Einstein lay on his deathbed, he asked only for his glasses, his writing implements and his latest equations. He knew he was dying, yet he continued his work. In those final hours of his life, while fading in and out of consciousness, he was working on what he hoped would be his greatest work of all. It was a project of monumental complexity. It was a project that he hoped would unlock the mind of God.

A Dodo's Guide to Surviving Extinction

Here is the complete "A Dodo's Guide to Surviving Extinction" in 8 parts.
(after watching one slide click on >> for the following part)
It is a bit ironic to take advise from a bird that is already extinct.
Anyway,
When Dutch sailors arrived on the island of Mauritius in 1602 they were greeted by an unknown, turkey-sized flightless bird. They called it 'Dodo'. Then they tried eating it. Within 80 years the Dodo was gone. The first celebrity extinction, notorious for its non-existence, the Dodo was the first animal to be so effortlessly wiped out by the interference of humans. Now more species than ever are threatened. If other animals are to avoid the Dodo's fate they would do well to learn from its experience and to follow 'A Dodo's Guide to Surviving Extinction'.

Fore Edge Painting

Some old books contain a wonderful surprise - if you know where to look! Because a fore-edge painting is hidden, someone who does not know what they are looking for will miss it completely. You need to take the pages and fan them out slightly, and if there is a fore-edge painting, it will appear.

Santa's Workshop

With Christmas fast approaching it is good to see where most toys come from and how they are made.

SANTA'S WORKSHOP takes you to the real world of China's toy factories. Workers tell us about long working hours, low wages, and dangerous work places. Those who protest or try to organize trade unions risk imprisonment. Low labour costs attract more and more companies to China. Today more than 75% of our toys are made in China. But this industry takes its toll on the workers and on the environment.

Don't Throw Water Over Burning Cooking Oil

An instruction video.
Why you should never put water over a frying pan with oil that has caught fire.
Use a damp cloth or the pan's lid to cover the pan and starve the fire of oxygen.
Thanks Keith.

Quickest way to cool a six- pack

With the Australian summer fast approaching I thought it was time to find the quickest way to cool a six pack. Of course I turned to Mythbusters for some help.

When we had our farewell party in the UK. The bathtub only had water and ice to cool the drinks..... no Sodium Chloride but it seemed to have done the trick for us.
