Golf

Friday I went golfing for the first time in my life (video: a spot had come free). We played 9 holes. It was hard in the beginning, but by the time we got by the 7th hole I got into the swing of things. Only lost 2 balls in a water feature and 2 tees. Not buying my own set of golf clubs yet, but not disgruntled about my lack of progress either yet.

GOOD: Business of Death

Throughout the developed world the business surrounding death has often been an uneasy topic of discussion. Originating in the mid-19th Century, the modern funeral has evolved into an economic and cultural monster, with a vast network of supporting industries and myriad options for your earthly remains.

In a nutshell: Who profits from your untimely misfortune? And the music isn't bad either.

Yet Another Birthday Present

As if Caroline hadn't spoiled me enough for my birthday, Saturday after we got up she decided that we should go somewhere........ It turned out we were going to the Australian Reptile Park on the warmest Spring day so far with the temperature hanging around the 27C.

At around 15.00 it started to get quiet and we had the whole park pretty much to ourselves. Because we were near the Entrance Caroline thought we might as well go there and have a look. What I did not know was when we got there that she had already booked us in a hotel for the night and she had secretly packed our bags that morning so we could drive around the area the following day and also see the Pelican Feeding.

I can't wait until my next birthday!!!

Live Feed of Two Security Camera's inside the LHC

For all those people who are worried that the LHC means our imminent doom.
Here is a link to a live feed of 2 security cameras inside the CERN complex that houses the Large Hadron Collider. You'll be the first to know when/if things go wrong:
Camera 7: looking at the Underground Experimental Cavern from the Saleve side.
Camera 8: looking out of the window of the 1st Floor of the SCX building that houses the CMS Control room.

10/09/08 My Birthday and the End of the World?!

The Large Hadron Collider by CERN
On my birthday the world might end, this is what doom tellers think when CERN fires up it's Large Hadron Collider on 10/09/08.
The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN)
near Geneva will fire subatomic particles into a 27-km long loop, making them travel it 11,245 times a second, and then smash them head on to seek answers to the birth of the universe.
Last week, Prof Otto Rössler and other naysayers of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment had hoped that the European Court of Human Rights would block it. They believe that the chances of a black hole — an intense gravitational field sucking in everything including light — being created by the experiment is very high. Rössler says that the worst case scenario will have the Earth sucked inside out “within four years of a mini-black hole forming”. The Court, however, dismissed the petition.

And this is what that might look like.

ARIA

Last night Caroline took me out to ARIA as an early birthday (10/09/08) present.
ARIA is one of Sydney's best restaurants. With Matt Moran in the kitchen it has been awarded 2 chefs hats by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004,2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009! And luckily for Caroline it was also awarded with this year's best wine list. Which she took full advantage of by sampling the wines for each course that went with our 7-course Spring degustation menu.

We had a hard time picking favorites and in the end we liked them all.
We had the petit fours twice, the second time they were served they came with a candle and neatly written in chocolate Happy Birthday. A very nice finish to a perfect meal.

And as part of my birthday Caroline also treated me to Matt Moran the latest book from and autographed by Matt Moran himself.

A big asteroid meets Planet Earth

Thanks to the Discovery Channel (Miracle Planet) and Pink Floyd - Great Gig in the Sky.

19367 Pink Floyd is an asteroid that has been named in honor of the English musical group Pink Floyd. It was discovered on December 3rd 1997. There is little information on the physical properties of 19367 Pink Floyd. Its diameter remains uncertain; range of 3 to 6 km is probable.19367 Pink Floyd's maximum brightness is estimated to be 1/14958 of the brightness of the faintest objects that can be seen with the human eye.The asteroid's name is unusual in that it is expressed as two words, instead of "Pinkfloyd" which is the format used by most other minor planets named for individuals or groups (although the asteroid named for the Rolling Stones is also expressed as two words).
